The problem
When children reach adulthood, start training or university and want to move out, much shifts at once: child benefit and support from an ex-partner stop, while you may become liable to pay maintenance yourself. For single parents, this financial step is often hard to foresee.
Solution
The calculator shows how income, child benefit and maintenance change year by year as children grow up, and helps you estimate the impact early and plan ahead.
The calculator simplifies the period up to age 25 during first vocational training or study. Whether and for how long maintenance is actually owed depends on the individual case: type of education, own income, moving out, and both parents' ability to pay.
In principle, maintenance claims end at adulthood. Exception: the child is in appropriate first vocational training (school, apprenticeship, university) and depends on support (§ 1610 para. 2 BGB). There is no flat entitlement "until 25", but a claim while training is usual, reasonable and not yet completed.
In case law and the Düsseldorf Table, adult children in training with their own accommodation are often calculated up to age 25 while first training continues. The calculator uses this common planning figure until the 25th birthday but does not replace individual legal advice.
Child benefit is usually paid until age 18, longer during first training (see Bundesagentur für Arbeit). Enter ex-partner support per child; this value remains in the forecast for adult children in training too.
For adult children in training (18 to 25), the calculator computes your own maintenance obligation: from your entered net income, the total need is taken from the Düsseldorf Table, and your payment is simplified as half of that amount per child. The ex-partner's share is not recalculated but taken from the support amounts you enter.
